Staying together in Marriage for 40 years.

In traditional Wedding vows...there is this phrase....

'.....for Richer or poorer, in sickness and health, till death do us part." Fourty years ago, when I said my wedding vows, I was full of many emotions. Most Brides & Grooms will wonder if they are doing the right thing, if this person is THE right person for them. So many things come into play... attitudes towards money, raising children, her family, his family, jobs, stepchildren and so on. 

Well here we are 40 years later. Every married couple has their joys, triumphs, and their failures and not-so-great moments. No-one is perfect. We are led to believe by the media that the Perfect One exists for us, in reality, staying together requires patience, communication, compromise, and more patience. Marriage is hard work. 

Having a renewal of Wedding vows at 25, 30, 40, or 50 years is a wonderful idea. It's something happy and positive to celebrate!

Happy Canada Day! Happy Canada Day!    Hello everyone! are you enjoying this beautiful warm weather we're having? Only in Thunder Bay would they issue a heat warning when the high is going to be 29C. Do you love hot weather, or do you retreat to an air-conditioned space? What is your favourite Summer activity? Hit reply to this email and let us know.    What are your plans for Canada Day? It's easy to get complacent and take our life in Canada for granted. I have lived in Canada for almost 43 years, before that I was in British Guyana, on the north coast of South America. Lately we've been watching 'Island of Bryan" on HGTV, where Brian and his crew are rebuilding a large resort in the Bahamas. I plead guilty to moaning about how bad Canadian weather is (in the Winter), but watching Island of Bryan is a reminder of the scorpions, snakes, termites, and other unmentionables. One BIG thing we take for granted in Canada isthat we can walk into a store and there are items on the shelf to buy. This is not always the case in the Caribbean...goods are imported and have to get shipped through Miami, then it has to clear customs, etc. You can't imagine how challenging it is to make a meal missing staples like flour, and cooking oil. Third World countries are broke, quite often, with no money to import food.  Building a Home is equally difficult, trying to procure fans and A/C units. What do you LoVe most about living in Canada?  We are OPEN Canada Day Weekend here at The Camellia. Friday 11-5, Sat. 11-5. and Sunday 12-5, Monday we are closed.  I just want to find some ME time...Time to do all the things I want to do, the ...someday, I will....  what have you put on hold waiting for someday..? "We can't wait until this Wedding is over....! " The Camellia, Thunder Bay Wedding Florist

Sometimes in our shop, we've overheard some customers talking to one another...and the conversation goes like this: " We can't wait until this Wedding is over!"  You may have felt this way when called upon to help with someone's Wedding. Weddings have become a huge production.....Engagement parties, Shags,  Stags, Bridal Showers, Rehearsal dinners, after-Wedding Breakfasts, and the list goes on. I'm sure you can add more events to this list. It does become overwhelming for those involved. So how can you prevent things from getting to this point? 

Social media doesn't help....photos of over-the-top-very-expensive-things keep popping up in your feed. You have to keep one important thing in mind..what do both of you want? 

Conflicts arise when others offer you advice....you are fine with 2 floral arrangements at the Reception, your bridesmaid thinks you should have 1 on every table. 

This wedding is about you and your partner-to-be. Your dreams. It's not a good sign when you hear..."We can't wait until this Wedding is over...!" It would all be easy if we all lived in the same town, or we all had holidays for a month leading up to the big event. But that's not real life. We still have to work, take care of children and grandchildren, run errands and do our day-to-day. So if you are hearing this phrase, it's time to step back, take a deep breath, and see what is essential, and what can be changed.

Happy spring! The Camellia, Thunder Bay, Ontario

It's March in Thunder Bay, and it will be  a while before our daffodils start growing, but in the meantime, we can look at cheery pics of our last year's blooms. 

 They are just so bright and springy! 

 Spring flowers are showy and colourful, like this bouquet of muscari, hydrangea, iris and other spring blooms. Are you planning a Spring wedding?  Here at The Camellia in Slate River we design bouquets of faux flowers that look real, but are not fresh. Perfect for Northern Ontario Spring weddings where the weather is unpredictable, warmish one day and freezing the next day. Yesterday it was 12 C, and today the high is 1C.

Above is one of our real-looking ( but not fresh) Spring centrepieces, which we made for a Wedding. 

Wonder what a faux bouquet looks like? Here is a photo of a bridesmaid bouquet we designed  which is faux, and mixed with real hypericum berries and grasses. If you are someone who is allergic to pollen, faux flowers are the way to go.
